Contemporary American

Covering art created from 1970 to the art made by the artists of today working “up to the minute,” Contemporary art is ever changing as time progresses. The terms “Modern and Contemporary Art are often grouped together, thought, modernism has become associated with a historical art movement, or more specifically, a group of movements taking place within a generally defined period of time (from 1860/70-1970). Thus, modern art, as presently defined, “ceased to be contemporary" if only from a historical timeline perspective.

Contemporary artists afford unique opportunities for collectors wise enough to discover the hidden gems amongst them. The volatile contemporary art market is one of the hottest markets in the art-world, with record prices reaching “super highs” at every turn, but, In this “Winner takes all” market where only a small proportion of artists are responsible for nearly 50% of all contemporary auction sales – picking the winners can be tricky.

Art movements like Minimalism, Conceptualism, Neo-pop, Graffiti, Installation art, Photorealism, Neo-Dadaism, Computer art and Absurdist art, came to age during the contemporary art market and continue to be redefined in the 21st century.

Notable proponents of the Contemporary American art market include: Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Bradford, Richard Prince, Keith Haring, Cindy Sherman, Edward Ruscha, Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, Frank Stella, Sol LeWitt, Chuck Close, Eva Hesse, Donald Judd, George Condo, Sean Scully, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, John Currin, Kara Walker, Cy Twombly, Diane Arbus, Brice Marden, Kaws and Agnes Martin
