Graffiti / Street Art

This category covers modern / contemporary Graffiti and Street Art from the late 1960’s through today.

Early Graffiti and Street Art was generally associated with an anti-establishment sentiment and not by coincidence, coincided with the widening development of aerosol paint, the medium of choice for many artists due to its speed and portability. 21st century substrates are no longer “the conventional parameters of paper, cardboard and canvas” but have moved on to “pavement, sidewalks” and subways.

Today, Graffiti and Street Art have become legitimized art forms, with many participants working in studios and exhibiting their work in a more mainstream fashion, balancing edgy expressionism and spontaneity with burgeoning acceptance.

Movements associated with Graffiti and Street artists include Neo-pop, Abstraction Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism.

Notable proponents include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Banksy, Mr Brainwash, Stik, Kaws, Invader and Lee Quiñones.

The record prices of works by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, a pillar of the contemporary art market (once chased by authorities for practicing his covert craft) illustrates the indisputable legitimacy that Graffiti and Street Art has attained. Basquiat is the only Contemporary artist whose work has crossed the $100m mark for a piece created post 1980.
