About Art “Styles (ALL)”

(Styles / Movements / Regions / Periods & Art Forms)

In the visual arts, “style” most often refers to the distinctive visual elements, techniques and methods that facilitate the grouping of artworks into related categories.  Sometimes this means that an artist’s work can relate to an art movement or a “school of art” that the artist is typically associated with – such as Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Pop Art and the like.  Style and Movement are therefore often used interchangeably in art.

Regional Art, geographically speaking, relates to regional artists living and/or practicing art in a region or location. For example, Oceanic art, relates in part to the visual arts created by the native people of the Pacific Islands and Australia – or somewhat more specifically - it is comprised of the artworks of the peoples who eventually settled these areas. American Regionalism – on the other hand - is a uniquely American art movement depicting stylized scenes of rural and small-town America - primarily of the Midwest and Deep South.

The history of art is as vast as man is old – the major art periods construct a historical artistic timeline dating back millennia.  These periods often reflected the sociopolitical influences in the distinct styles and characteristics of the art from the period in which they are associated with.  The myriads of artistic styles, movements, regional influences and periods were depicted using a vast array of art forms - such as, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts, and many others.
