Contemporary International

Covering art created from 1970 to the art made by the artists of today working “up to the minute,” Contemporary art is ever changing as time progresses. The terms “Modern and Contemporary Art are often grouped together, thought, modernism has become associated with a historical art movement, or more specifically, a group of movements taking place within a generally defined period of time (from 1860/70-1970). Thus, modern art, as presently defined, “ceased to be contemporary" if only from a historical timeline perspective.

Contemporary artists afford unique opportunities for collectors wise enough to discover the hidden gems amongst them. The volatile contemporary art market is one of the hottest markets in the art-world, with record prices reaching “super highs” at every turn, but, In this “Winner takes all” market where only a small proportion of artists are responsible for nearly 50% of all contemporary auction sales – picking them can be tricky – if not expensive.

Art movements like Minimalism, Conceptualism, Neo-pop, Graffiti, Installation art, Photorealism, Neo-Dadaism, Computer art and Absurdist art, came to age during the contemporary art market and continue to be redefined in the 21st century.

Notable proponents of the Contemporary International art market include: Ai Weiwei, Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami’s, Nara Yoshitomo, Gerhard Richter, Peter Doig, Giovanni Anselmo, David Hockney, Damien Hirst, Frank Auerbach, Thomas Schutte, ZHANG Xiaogang, George Condo, Fang Lijun, Yoshitomo Nara,  Liu Wei, Takashi Murakami and Christine Ay Tjoe.

While Jean-Michel Basquiat remains atop the Contemporary Market’s leader board, Chinese artists are performing remarkably well, widely driven by new wealth in a domestic market that now competes with the American Art Market. Asian collectors tend to be “much younger” than the average global demographic. In 2019 Hong Kong saw 40% of auction bidders under the age of 45. It will be interesting to see if younger Western collectors follow suit and take up the mantle of art aficionado any time soon. The United States, Hong Kong, China and the United Kingdom currently account for lion’s share of the global Contemporary Art market.
