Artifacts / Antiquities

The category covers historical, cultural and ethnic objects from the dawn of mankind through the pre-contact period / prior to the early 1500’s (artifacts) and historical, cultural and ethnic objects dating from 4000 B.C through the 12th Century A.D (classical antiquities).

The archeological term artifact pertains to anything made, altered or given shape by human hands such as tools, beads, pottery, metal objects, weapons and jewelry from the distant past. The cultural heritage of early African, Pre-Columbian and Oceanic civilizations are more often associated with the term “artifact” than “antiquities.” Classical antiquities generally relate to the civilizations of the Mediterranean and other Ancient Near Eastern cultures such as Greece, Rome and Ancient Egypt or earlier “advanced” civilizations from Asia and elsewhere.

Most artifacts and antiquities have been recovered by archaeology, treasure hunting, looting and conquest, much has been lost to the latter – like the thousands of pounds of fine and delicate gold creations crafted by the highly skilled Aztec goldsmiths – melted down by the Spanish conquers.
