The category covers Modern and Contemporary Design from the beginning of the Arts & Crafts Movement of 1875 through the Post-Modernism movement early 1980’s. (the Modern Design era) as well as Contemporary Design (late 1980’s through today). Contemporary Design means “of the present” and refers to the very latest trends of the day.

 

One of the most popular Modern Design movements, Mid-century Modernism (1940s-'60s) like many aesthetic movements, grew out opposition to the more conservative decorative arts, which included the Victorian style, Arts and Crafts, Craftsman, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Modern Design informed almost every facet of life, including architecture, industrial design, fashion, painting, furniture, jewelry, sculpture and others.

 

Movements and Genres associated with Modern and Contemporary Design include Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Prairie School, Vienna Secession, De Stijl, Wiener Werkstatte, German Werkbund, Bauhaus School, mid-century modern, Eames era, Machine Age, Late Modernism, Postmodernism, Deconstructivism and Contemporary Design.
