Photography - Modern / Contemporary

This category covers photographic works from the early 1900s through the 1960s, (the modern photography era) as well as Contemporary photography (1970’s through today).

The move from early photography to modern photography is marked by practitioners using the camera as a direct artistic instrument, exploiting techniques and printing processes to create, rather than simply “capture” subjects. Alfred Stieglitz, a founder of the early Photo-Secession group in New York, is credited as being one of the leaders of American modern photography in the early twentieth century.

Modern and Contemporary photography movements include Straight Photography, Pictorialism, Photodynamism, Photomontage, Postmodern, Conceptual, Abstract, Street and Digital photography.

Today’s modern and contemporary photography market is seeing world record results for sought-after masterpieces by the most important artist of the 20th and 21st centuries - including, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Eggleston, Diane Arbus Eugène Atget, Irving Penn, Richard Misrach, Richard Avedon and Andreas Gursky.
