This early, colorful expressionist work, was painted by the American Modernist (Guggenheim) master - Rolph Scarlett. The piece was acquired directly from the estate representative, Harriet Tannin, Woodstock, NY.

Rolph Scarlett was in New York City, active as a modernist painter, executing cutting-edge "Non-Objective" abstractions, and other similar avant-garde artworks when the first surrealist decended upon New York - fleeing unrest in Europe due to the war. Scarlett assimilated many influences - but always presented them in his own artistic lexicon.

Rolph Scarlett was amongst the third largest holdings of the Guggenheim Museum (behind Bauer & Kandinsky) - Solomon Guggenheim, at the behest of Hilla Rebay - Guggenheim's art advisor - gave Scarlett the longest Guggenheim fellowship of any artist - 11 years. Solomon Guggenheim acquired over 60 works by Scarlett for the museum.
