Part of a limited group of early 1950's drip paintings, done in oil on paper - by Rolph Scarlett. According to Harriet Tannin, the longtime executrix  of the Rolph Scarlett estate (now deceased) - Scarlett became an acquaintance of Jackson Pollock's during the time when Pollock was working at the Guggenheim Museum  as a "carpenter" while Scarlett was a curator (under fellowship) at the Museum in New York during the same time.

Rolph Scarlett was amongst the third largest holdings of the Guggenheim Museum (behind Bauer & Kandinsky) - Solomon Guggenheim, at the behest of Hilla Rebay - Guggenheim's art advisor - gave Scarlett the longest Guggenheim fellowship of any artist - 11 years. Solomon Guggenheim acquired over 60 works by Scarlett for the museum.
