Estate provenance encaustic on paper by Emil Bisttram. This is a nice early work completed just after Bisttram and a small group of artists, founded their modernist "Transcedental" art movement in Taos.

Bisttram was an American modern artist who lived in New York and Taos, New Mexico – two prominent centers of modernism during the mid-century.  In 1938, just a year before the present work was executed - he and Raymond Johnson, another modernist - founded the Transcendental Painting Group, along with several other Santa Fe artists. This group was known for combining a “fascinating array of spiritual, philosophical, and scientific traditions” in their work. The group is credited with establishing Taos as an early school of modernism.
