The present work is a very detailed Geometric abstraction by Rolph Scarlett - acquired directly from the estate representative, Harriet Tannin, Woodstock, NY.  These detailed geometrics were the next evolution in line from his non-objective geometric abstractions from the late 1930's. He later built upon this style further by painting in a manner that some say - prefigured Hard Hdge, Color Field and Minimalism - as seen in many of his geometric works from the late 1950's onward.

Rolph Scarlett was amongst the third largest holdings of the Guggenheim Museum (behind Bauer & Kandinsky). Solomon Guggenheim, at the behest of Hilla Rebay - Guggenheim's art advisor - gave Scarlett the longest Guggenheim fellowship of any artist - 11 years. Guggenheim acquired over 60 works by Scarlett for the museum.
