This work was acquired directly from the Scarlett estate representative, Harriet Tannin, Woodstock, NY.
Harriet, a mentor, friend and artist who I represented exclusively - made a formal introduction to Sam Esses on my behalf in 2005. After speaking with Sam - I hastily made the trip to his home in Long Island to see his stunning collection of Rolph Scarlett works. Works that Sam acquired over a long and stimulating relationship with the artist - one that is now - years later - well documented. Sam stated that I was the first person to see the collection in its entirety - except possibly for family. Sam left me alone for many hours in his attached studio so I could take-in the magnitude of the collection - uninterupted. To date - it is the most comprehensive and important collection of Rolph Scarlett works I have seen - or rather - I will ever see in one place, at one time - it was breathtaking. Years later, I facilitated introductions to galleries on both coasts - that are now synonomous with Rolph Scarlett. At a later date, Sam allowed me to inventory his entire collection with a colleague. It was a rare privelage!
Rolph Scarlett was amongst the third largest holdings of the Guggenheim Museum (behind Bauer & Kandinsky) - Solomon Guggenheim, at the behest of Hilla Rebay - Guggenheim's art advisor - gave Scarlett the longest Guggenheim fellowship of any artist - 11 years. Solomon Guggenheim acquired over 60 works by Scarlett for the museum.
